Mangaluru: In a remarkable demonstration of surgical excellence and compassionate care, the Plastic Surgery Department at Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH) has successfully performed a complex ear reconstruction surgery on a 13-year-old boy born with microtia, a congenital condition in which the external ear is absent or underdeveloped.

The young patient had only one normally developed ear since birth, which affected both his physical appearance and self-confidence. Seeking advanced medical care, the family approached FMMCH, where a specialised team of surgeons undertook the challenging procedure to reconstruct the ear.

Complex reconstructive surgery using rib cartilage

The surgical team adopted a highly specialised technique using the patient’s own rib cartilage, considered the gold standard in reconstructive microsurgery. This method allows for the creation of a natural-looking ear framework with long-term durability.

The procedure was carried out in two carefully planned stages. In the first stage, rib cartilage was harvested and meticulously sculpted to form the structure of the ear. In the second stage, the newly constructed ear was elevated from its base and covered with a skin graft to achieve a realistic shape and projection.

The surgery was completed successfully without complications, demonstrating the precision and expertise of the medical team.

Team effort ensures successful outcome

The surgery was led by Professor and Head of the Department, Dr. Aravind Rao, with support from consultants Dr. Karthik Aithal and Dr. Sai Ananthalakshmi. Anaesthesia support was provided by Professor Dr. Radhesh Hegde and Dr. Abhiram Shastry.

The nursing team, led by Operation Theatre In-charge Mrs. Reshma, played a crucial role in ensuring smooth coordination throughout the procedure. The multidisciplinary approach contributed significantly to the success of the surgery.

Advanced care and patient-centred approach

The achievement highlights the advanced surgical capabilities and patient-centred approach at FMMCH. From pre-operative planning to post-operative care, the hospital ensured comprehensive support for the patient.

The case also underscores the importance of specialised reconstructive procedures in improving not just physical outcomes but also emotional well-being, especially in young patients.

Family expresses gratitude

The patient’s family expressed deep gratitude to the hospital and the medical team for their efforts. The boy’s father conveyed heartfelt appreciation for restoring not only his son’s physical appearance but also his confidence and quality of life.

The successful outcome has given the child renewed self-esteem and hope for the future.

Conclusion

The ear reconstruction surgery at Father Muller Medical College Hospital stands as a testament to the institution’s commitment to combining advanced medical expertise with compassionate care. By restoring both form and confidence, the hospital continues its legacy of delivering holistic healthcare and transforming lives.
