A team of officials, led by Kaup Tahsildar Pratibha, recently sealed a fish factory in Padu village, Kaup taluk, following years of complaints regarding severe pollution and an unbearable stench affecting local residents. The factory had been discharging untreated waste and emitting foul odors, causing significant environmental damage and making life difficult for the people. Despite numerous complaints, no action had been taken to address the issue until now.

Tahsildar Pratibha explained that the closure was necessary to protect the area’s land and water resources. The Pollution Control Board had previously inspected the factory, reporting that it was releasing harmful waste into the environment. Based on this report, Udupi Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari issued an order to seal the factory. Following these instructions, Tahsildar Pratibha enforced the shutdown under Section 33(A) of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974, and Rule 34 of the Karnataka Water Pollution Control Rules, 1976.

Pratibha emphasized the importance of industries adopting proper waste management practices. “Industrial growth is important, but so is environmental protection,” she said. “Industries that fail to comply with waste management norms will face similar consequences.”

Residents of Padu village expressed their gratitude for the action taken. The operation was supported by officials including Revenue Inspector Ijjar Sabir, police department members, and representatives from Mescom and other departments.
