Mangaluru – Following the encouraging response to the Karnataka Public School (KPS) initiative in Dakshina Kannada, efforts are underway to propose the conversion of five more high-enrolment government schools in the district into KPS institutions.
Presently, Dakshina Kannada boasts nine Karnataka Public Schools, collectively educating over 7,000 students. MLC Manjunath Bhandary revealed that the proposal emerged after he adopted the Government Higher Primary and High School at Bengre Kasaba. This school is now on the list of candidates for the KPS upgrade.
Other proposed schools include those in Machina, Kalladka, Moodbidri-Mulki constituency, and one in Bantwal taluk—though the final two selections are yet to be confirmed. “We are preparing to submit the proposal to the state government within the next two weeks,” Bhandary said. He also mentioned that five schools in Udupi district have been suggested for the same.
The KPS model, launched in 2018-19, aims to enhance the quality of government education. It sets benchmarks for learning outcomes: 75% of students must attain the expected competencies, and the rest should reach at least 50%.
Currently, nine schools in DK have KPS status—Kanyana, Montepadavu, Punjalkatte, Muthur, Mijar, Keyyur, Kumbra, Bellare, and Gandhinagara in Sullia. These schools integrate primary to pre-university education within a single campus and streamline academic and administrative functions.
Though welcomed by educators, local education department officials said they’ve yet to receive formal communication. “KPS status depends on student numbers, available facilities, and generally favours rural schools,” said a senior official.
