Mangaluru: The Department of ENT, in collaboration with the Department of Anatomy at Father Muller Medical College, successfully conducted a two-day CME and Hands-on Temporal Bone Dissection Workshop on June 20 and 21, 2025. The event was tailored for postgraduate ENT students from various medical colleges across Mangaluru, aiming to sharpen their skills in intricate otologic surgeries.
Inauguration and leadership
The event was inaugurated with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony in the presence of esteemed dignitaries including Rev. Fr. Faustine Lucas Lobo (Director, FMCI), Rev. Fr. Ajith Menezes (Administrator, FMMC), Rev. Fr. George Jeevan Sequeira (Administrator, FMMCH), and Dr. Anthony Sylvan D’Souza (Dean, FMMC).
Dr. Vinay V Rao, Professor and Head of the ENT department, served as the Organising Chairman, with Dr. Adhyasha Surendran (Senior Resident, ENT) as the Organising Secretary. Dr. Somesh S and Dr. Varsha Shenoy from the Anatomy department were Joint Organising Secretaries.
Dr. Kumaraswamy Krishnappa, a veteran ENT surgeon from Basavangudi ENT Centre, Bengaluru, graced the occasion as the Course Director and Chief Guest.
Training highlights
Day 1 focused on foundational and advanced middle ear procedures. A special session by Dr. Deviprasad D, Professor and Head, ENT at Kasturba Medical College, detailed the surgical anatomy of the temporal bone, emphasising key anatomical landmarks and safety protocols.
Live demonstrations by Dr. Kumaraswamy Krishnappa included:

Myringotomy with Grommet Insertion
Stapedotomy
Posterior Tympanotomy
Epitympanotomy
Participants then performed these procedures under faculty supervision, gaining critical hands-on exposure using high-resolution microscopes and modern instrumentation.
Day 2 advanced into more complex surgeries such as:

Facial Nerve Decompression
Endolymphatic Sac Decompression
Cochleostomy
Labyrinthectomy
These intricate procedures were practised in simulated lab settings, guided by experienced otologic surgeons.
Institutional pride and participant feedback
Rev. Fr. Faustine Lucas Lobo, in his presidential remarks, praised the departments for launching this initiative at Father Muller for the first time, emphasising its long-term impact on ENT surgical training.
Dr. Vinay V Rao welcomed the gathering with insights into the growing need for precision in ENT surgery. Dr. Adhyasha Surendran offered a heartfelt vote of thanks, acknowledging the faculty, staff, and students. The ceremony was anchored by Dr. Gouri Ramesh, second-year PG student.
Participants commended the workshop’s well-structured format, expert guidance, and intensive hands-on training, describing it as a “transformative experience” in their postgraduate journey.
