Mangaluru: After a brief lull, heavy rains have returned to the coastal districts of Karnataka, with Mangaluru experiencing continuous showers since Thursday morning.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon is set to intensify over the next week. A yellow alert has been issued for several districts — Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Belagavi, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Chikkamagaluru, and Shivamogga — warning of heavy rain until August 20.

For the coastal belt, a yellow alert will remain in effect until August 17, after which rainfall is expected to strengthen further. The IMD has issued an orange alert for very heavy rain on August 18, 19, and 20. Additionally, thunderstorms with lightning are forecast for August 14 and 15.

Rainfall reports from Wednesday show Aland (Kalaburagi) and Agumbe (Shivamogga) each receiving 5 cm of rain, while Manki (Uttara Kannada), Kundapur (Udupi), Shakti Nagar (Dakshina Kannada), Kukkeri (Yadgir), and Kumta (Uttara Kannada) recorded 4 cm each.

Authorities have urged residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas to remain cautious as the monsoon intensifies.
