Jammer Restored at Mangaluru Jail, Locals Hit by Network Woes Again
Mangaluru: The mobile signal jammer at Mangaluru District Jail, which had remained inactive for almost a month following damage in an inmate clash, has now been repaired and reactivated. While this move addresses jail security concerns, it has once again led to significant network issues for nearby residents and businesses.
The jammer was rendered dysfunctional after a violent altercation between inmates on May 20. During the downtime, locals and shopkeepers around the jail experienced rare relief with strong, uninterrupted mobile signals—an unusual occurrence in the area typically plagued by signal blocks due to the jammer.
Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara, who visited the jail recently, had expressed concern over the security lapse and instructed officials to ensure the jammer was repaired without causing inconvenience to the public.
However, since its reinstallation, people living and working near the jail have reported a return of connectivity issues. Frequent call drops, delayed messages, and sluggish internet speeds are now common complaints, indicating that the minister’s directive to avoid public disruption may not have been implemented effectively.
Local traders argue that the renewed signal interference is affecting business operations, especially digital payments and customer communication. Residents, too, are frustrated by the lack of mobile access in emergencies and daily use.
While security measures inside the prison are necessary, the public is urging authorities to explore alternative solutions that balance safety with digital accessibility for the surrounding community.
