KMC Hospital, Mangaluru, saves 3-year-old boy with complex liver condition & epilepsy
Mangaluru, 22 November 2024: In a landmark achievement, KMC Hospital, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Circle, Mangaluru, successfully treated a three-year-old boy battling Budd-Chiari syndrome and myoclonic epilepsy, two life-threatening conditions. Thanks to a multidisciplinary approach, the child, referred to as Master Krish (name changed), has made a full recovery.
A critical diagnosis
Admitted in September 2024 with severe abdominal swelling and breathing difficulty, Master Krish presented with an abdominal girth of 63 cm and weighed just 12 kg. Investigations revealed Budd-Chiari syndrome, characterised by the blockage of all three major hepatic veins, causing liver dysfunction and fluid buildup in the abdomen. Complicating his condition was his history of epilepsy.
Given his unstable clinical condition and the absence of adequate vein calibre for surgical intervention, the case posed significant challenges to the medical team.
The multidisciplinary approach
A team of experts including:
- Dr. Soundarya (Pediatrician)
- Dr. Keerthiraj (Interventional Neuro-Radiologist)
- Dr. Vijay Kumar (Pediatric Intensivist)
- Dr. Machiah (Radiologist)
- Dr. Sunil (Anaesthetist)
devised an innovative treatment plan. A Direct Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt (DIPS) procedure was performed, creating a stent to restore blood flow to the liver.
Dr. Keerthiraj explained, “This precise interventional procedure decompresses portal hypertension by placing a stent from the inferior vena cava to the portal vein. It was critical to saving Krish’s life.”
Successful recovery
Post-procedure, despite critical liver dysfunction, the hospital’s Paediatric ICU team provided round-the-clock care. Within days, Krish showed improvement as liver function normalized. A month later, the young patient is healthy and symptom-free.
Dr. Soundarya praised the collaboration, noting, “Treating both the neurological and hepatic challenges required a comprehensive plan. Seeing him recover so well is incredibly rewarding.”
Family gratitude and institutional pride
Krish’s family expressed heartfelt gratitude to the hospital’s medical team. Saghir Siddiqui, Regional Chief Operating Officer, emphasized, “This case demonstrates the power of teamwork in healthcare. Our multidisciplinary expertise ensured the best outcome for Krish. We are proud to offer advanced paediatric emergency and critical care services.”
