Mangaluru: Kasturba Medical College (KMC) Mangaluru has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BEBIG Medical GmbH, a globally recognised leader in brachytherapy systems and technologies, to establish a Centre for Advanced Brachytherapy Training at KMC Hospital, Attavar.
Pioneering partnership in cancer care
The collaboration aims to advance cancer treatment through world-class training in brachytherapy, an advanced radiation therapy technique that enables precise delivery of radiation to tumours. The new centre will provide structured, hands-on training to radiation oncologists and medical physicists from India and around the world, helping to standardise clinical practices and enhance global expertise in this critical field.
According to KMC representatives, the initiative underscores the institution’s commitment to clinical excellence, academic innovation, and international collaboration in cancer management.
Brachytherapy: precision and care in cancer treatment
Brachytherapy, also known as internal radiotherapy, involves placing a radioactive source directly inside or next to the tumour. This approach allows radiation to be delivered precisely to cancerous tissue while sparing surrounding healthy organs. The method not only improves tumour control but also reduces side effects, shortens treatment duration, and enhances patient recovery outcomes.
This treatment plays an essential role in managing cervical, prostate, breast, and select head and neck cancers, offering a combination of effectiveness and safety that complements other radiotherapy techniques.
KMC Mangaluru: emerging as a global training hub
The Oncology Centre at KMC Hospital, Attavar, has already earned recognition for its leadership in clinical and academic excellence in brachytherapy. In the past year, the department conducted three international and national training programmes, welcoming participants from Botswana, the Maldives, and India’s Armed Forces Medical Services.
The newly signed MoU with BEBIG Medical GmbH will further strengthen these educational initiatives, establishing KMC Mangaluru as a regional and global hub for advanced brachytherapy training and research.
