Mangaluru: Following the success of its Karkala-Moodbidri-Mangaluru route, KSRTC is gearing up to introduce 10 electric buses between Mangaluru and Udupi. Rajesh Shetty, Divisional Controller of KSRTC Mangaluru, confirmed the plan, citing growing public demand for additional buses.

“Currently, only two KSRTC buses operate on this route, both running at full capacity. Public requests for more services prompted us to act. Of the 45 electric buses sanctioned for the division, 10 are allocated for this route. Charging stations are being set up, and once tenders are finalized, the buses will commence operations,” said Shetty.

The electric buses, which take around 2.5 hours to fully charge, offer a range of 180-200 km. Each bus can complete three trips per charge, enabling five to six trips daily. KSRTC plans to operate buses every 30 minutes from early morning to late night, ensuring convenience for commuters.

With 45 seats and standing room for 60-70 passengers, the buses will prioritize major stops, reducing travel time between Udupi and Mangaluru to just one hour for the 55 km stretch. Charging stations will be established at Bejai Bus Station, Mangaluru’s third depot, and Udupi depot.

Santhosh, a regular commuter, expressed optimism, stating, “KSRTC buses will end the constant competition among private operators, making travel much smoother.”

Highlighting the coastal region’s heat and humidity, Shetty added, “The electric buses will be air-conditioned, offering a comfortable experience. Our previous AC service between Manipal and Mangaluru was well-received, and we expect similar enthusiasm for this initiative.”
