MANGALURU: A shocking case has come to light in Dakshina Kannada district, where a man has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting his own daughter. The case has been registered at the Dakshina Kannada Women’s Police Station under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Accused identified as Abdul Hanif
Police have identified the accused as Abdul Hanif, who has since been taken into custody. According to officials, preliminary investigations revealed that Hanif had allegedly been involved in the offence over a period of time before the matter came to the notice of the authorities. Following the complaint, the Women’s Police Station registered a case and arrested him.
Case registered under POCSO and BNS
The police have booked Hanif under Sections 64(2)(f)(m) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with Sections 5(l)(n) and 6 of the POCSO Act, which pertain to aggravated sexual assault on a minor. The case has been registered as Crime No. 80/2025.
Officials stated that the accused was produced before a court, which has remanded him to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway to gather evidence and record statements from the victim and other witnesses.
Police to ensure swift investigation
Authorities have assured that the matter will be handled with utmost sensitivity, given the involvement of a minor victim. The Dakshina Kannada Women’s Police Station has formed a dedicated team to investigate the case, while the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has been informed to provide necessary psychological and legal support to the victim.
Senior police officials said that the case underscores the need for greater vigilance and community awareness to protect children from such crimes, even within their own homes.
Legal proceedings to follow
With the accused in judicial custody, the police are expected to file a charge sheet after completing the investigation. Legal experts note that if convicted, the accused could face rigorous imprisonment under the stringent provisions of the POCSO Act.
