A Mangaluru man fell victim to an elaborate investment scam, losing ₹16.9 lakh to fraudsters who lured him through a WhatsApp group. The incident came to light when the man filed a complaint with the Mangaluru Rural Police on Sunday.
According to the victim’s statement, he was added to a WhatsApp group where the scammers promised lucrative returns on investments in the share market. Trusting their claims, he downloaded an app through a link shared by the accused. The app appeared legitimate, leading the victim to transfer money to various bank accounts on multiple occasions, as instructed by the scammers.
The victim soon discovered that he was unable to withdraw the money he had supposedly earned through the app. Realizing that he had been duped, he approached the police and lodged a formal complaint.
Mangaluru Rural Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. They are working to trace the fraudsters and recover the victim’s lost money. Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of investment opportunities, especially those offered via digital platforms or messaging apps.
This case highlights the growing prevalence of cyber fraud and the need for increased awareness to prevent such scams. Police recommend avoiding unsolicited investment offers, downloading unknown apps, or sharing personal or financial information without thorough verification.
