Students and educational institutions have urged Mangalore University (MU) to avoid scheduling exams during the Christmas and year-end festive period, from December 24 to January 1, 2025. Colleges in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, previously affiliated with Madras University, have long observed Christmas holidays as part of their tradition.
According to MU’s academic calendar for 2024-25, a week-long Christmas vacation was slated to begin on December 24. However, the latest examination timetable for odd semesters (1, 3, 5) includes end-semester exams during this period. This has sparked concerns, as the week is significant for community gatherings and holiday travel.
A principal revealed that during a recent online meeting, college heads requested Vice-Chancellor PL Dharma to reschedule the exams to prevent inconvenience for students and staff. Despite these appeals, the university decided to proceed with its original plan.
Registrar (Evaluation) H. Devendrappa stated that postponing exams was not feasible, given the semester exams start on December 11. However, MU has declared holidays from December 20 to 24 to accommodate BBA and BCom students appearing for CA exams. The next semester exams are set to commence on December 28. Additionally, a holiday has been announced for the Huttari festival celebrated in Kodagu district.
The decision has left students and colleges disappointed, highlighting the need for better academic planning to balance exams and festive traditions.
