Mangaluru: In a significant advancement for orthopaedic care, KMC Hospital, Dr B R Ambedkar Circle, has successfully performed the city’s first RECLAIM Revision Hip System implantation on an 85-year-old woman suffering from a severely comminuted and unstable hip fracture.
The patient, referred to as Jaya (name changed), was unable to walk due to the complexity of her fracture. The challenging procedure was led by a multidisciplinary team comprising Dr Vikram G K Bhat, Consultant – Orthopaedic, Dr Sudhindra K, Consultant – Orthopaedic, and Dr Shilpa G K Bhat, Anaesthetist, at KMC Hospital, Mangaluru.
Choosing an advanced surgical approach
Following a thorough clinical evaluation and counselling, the patient and her family were presented with treatment options. Considering the nature of the fracture and her overall health, the team opted for the RECLAIM Revision Hip System – a specialised implant designed to bypass fractured bone segments and provide immediate post-operative stability.
“Elderly patients with severely comminuted hip fractures present a unique set of challenges—not just in terms of bone quality, but also recovery potential,” explained Dr Vikram G K Bhat. “By choosing this system, we enabled the patient to walk right after surgery, which is essential for faster recovery and reducing complications.”
Smooth recovery and rehabilitation
The surgery was completed without intraoperative complications. The patient responded well to post-operative physiotherapy and is now self-ambulating, with ongoing rehabilitation support to aid full recovery.
Commitment to innovation in healthcare
Mr Saghir Siddiqui, Regional Chief Operating Officer at KMC Hospital, emphasised the hospital’s dedication to advanced patient care. “Successfully performing Mangaluru’s first RECLAIM Revision Hip System implantation is a testament to our clinical expertise and our commitment to improving patient outcomes, especially in high-risk, complex cases.”
This achievement reflects KMC Hospitals’ broader mission to provide cutting-edge orthopaedic solutions tailored to the needs of elderly patients, combining innovation with multidisciplinary collaboration for optimal results.
