Mangaluru City Corporation Against Illegal Discharge of Rainwater into Sewage System
The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has issued a stern warning against the illegal discharge of rainwater into the underground drainage (UGD) network and stormwater drains. The MCC has observed that several residences, apartments, commercial establishments, and industries are improperly diverting rainwater into the sewage system, resulting in overflows and public inconvenience.
This practice has led to a mix of sewage and rainwater, overwhelming the drainage system and causing manhole overflows. In response, the MCC has prohibited any connection of rainwater pipelines, rooftop runoff, or other forms of rainwater discharge into the UGD network and manholes. The corporation has directed that any unauthorized connections be disconnected immediately.
To enforce this, MCC officials and staff are conducting on-site inspections to identify and eliminate illegal connections. Legal action will be taken against those found violating the directive. Furthermore, the MCC has warned that a penalty of ₹5,000 will be imposed for the first offense if sewage is discharged into stormwater drains, which are intended only for rainwater. If the violation continues after a legal notice, an additional fine of ₹1,000 per day will be levied, and the water supply to the building may be disconnected.
Additionally, the MCC will disconnect unauthorized connections and recover the operational costs from the building owners, along with imposing a fine of up to ₹25,000. The corporation emphasized the importance of public cooperation in maintaining a clean and pollution-free Mangaluru. Citizens are encouraged to report any unauthorized rainwater connections to the MCC helpline at 0824-2220306 or via WhatsApp at 9449007722.
