Mangaluru: Growing concerns over a worsening health crisis among students near the Pachanady dumping ground have prompted urgent appeals for action. Christon Menezes, President of NSUI Mangalore City South, has formally called upon state and local authorities to address the severe health hazards plaguing school and college students in the area.

Health Risks & Student Impact

In a letter to the Chief Minister, Governor, and Chief Secretary, Menezes highlighted the rising cases of respiratory illnesses such as asthma, chest pain, and breathing difficulties among students. Reports suggest that some students have been hospitalized, while others are dropping out of school due to the poor air quality and unsanitary conditions caused by the dumping site.

Demand for Immediate Action

Menezes criticized the negligence of the Mangalore City Corporation and district administration, accusing them of risking student health through continued inaction. The NSUI demands the relocation of the dumping ground to an area at least 5 km away from schools, colleges, and residential zones to prevent further health damage.

Call for Sustainable Solutions

The mounting pressure from students and activists is expected to push authorities toward a comprehensive waste management strategy. Addressing the long-term health and educational impact on affected students remains a critical priority that demands immediate intervention.
