Mangaluru: A violent assault inside Mangaluru Central Jail has led to a serious legal development, with a case being registered under the Karnataka Control of Organised Crime Act (KCOCA) at Barke Police Station.

As per reports, four inmates—Dhanush Bhandari alias Dhanu, Dilesh Bangera alias Dillu, Loy Vegas alias Loy, and Sachin Talapadi—allegedly attacked a fellow prisoner. The case has been registered under IPC Section 308(4) for attempt to commit culpable homicide, along with Section 3(5) of the KCOCA.

During the investigation, it was found that the accused also extorted ₹20,000 from the victim, which was transferred through a bank account allegedly facilitated by one of the accused via his wife. Police officials say this reflects organized criminal behaviour behind bars.

City Police Commissioner confirmed that KCOCA provisions apply if an individual has two or more cases and is involved in further criminal acts. In this case, the accused met that criterion, and thus, KCOCA charges have been added.

Under KCOCA, anyone aiding or abetting organised crime—even without prior convictions—faces 5 years to life imprisonment. There’s also a minimum three-year sentence for those involved in such acts.

Authorities are continuing the investigation to trace all networks and financial transactions linked to the crime.
