Mangaluru Police Use Short Videos To Raise Awareness On New Criminal Laws

With the implementation of new criminal laws—the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA)—the Mangaluru City police are raising public awareness through short videos. Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal announced that they plan to produce seven episodes, with four already shot and two released to positive feedback. Upcoming episodes will address women’s issues and other critical topics.

Agrawal noted that during training, the need to educate law students and the public became clear, leading to the idea of videos. Utilizing the online platform Mangalore Meri Jaan, they created effective and accessible videos, receiving encouraging responses. These efforts may extend to future awareness drives on topics like cybercrime.

Highlighting the community service aspect of the new laws, Agrawal pointed out that jail time often worsens offenders’ behavior, particularly affecting middle-class communities’ job prospects and reputations. Community service, inspired by Western models, offers a constructive alternative to overcrowded jails. The videos will also cover digital evidence and evidence-giving processes to provide clarity. ACP CCB Geetha Kulkarni has trained over 1,000 officers, ensuring thorough understanding and implementation of the new laws.
