Mangaluru: Rail passengers have reason to cheer — the railway line between Mangaluru Central and Subrahmanya Road has been fully electrified, and trains on this stretch will switch to electric locomotives from September 15.

Electrification milestone

Since June, work has been underway on the Subrahmanya Road–Edakumeri–Hassan section, aimed at completing full electrification of the Mangaluru–Bengaluru line. Once the Hassan link is ready, even long-distance services towards Bengaluru will operate entirely on electric traction, enabling the launch of a Vande Bharat Express on this route.

Railway officials confirmed that an electric locomotive trial run between Mangaluru and Subrahmanya Road was successfully conducted on Wednesday.

Services to go electric from Sept 15

Currently, three passenger services run daily on the Mangaluru–Subrahmanya Road line:

  • Morning passenger: Mangaluru Central → Subrahmanya Road → Mangaluru

  • Afternoon passenger: Mangaluru Central ↔ Subrahmanya Road

  • Evening passenger: Mangaluru Central → Subrahmanya Road → returns at night

  • All these services will now operate with electric engines from September 15.
