Mayor Awaits ECI Clearance to Convene Crucial MCC Meetings

Sudheer Shetty Kannur

Mangaluru: Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur, unable to chair the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council meetings for the past three months due to the model code of conduct, is now waiting for clearance from the Election Commission of India (ECI) to hold a monthly general meeting and other official gatherings. Shetty emphasized the urgency of these meetings to implement measures to prevent rain damage in the city.

He plans to discuss the situation with the MCC commissioner to schedule a council meeting soon. Shetty’s term ends in August, with only three council meetings remaining. He highlighted the lack of clarity regarding the model code of conduct following the legislative council and Lok Sabha elections, which hindered his plans for a council meeting focused on monsoon preparedness. The formation of MCC gangs to clear stormwater drain blockages and coordination with fire, emergency, and forest departments are critical tasks awaiting discussion.

Despite the delays, the mayor assured that a council meeting would be held by the end of June, along with other official meetings and his phone-in program. “I have to convene three council meetings in the next three months of my tenure,” Shetty noted, expressing frustration over missing the meetings in March, April, and May due to the election.
