The iconic Nehru Maidan in Mangaluru, a central hub for football lovers in Dakshina Kannada, is all set to unveil its newly installed artificial turf by the end of May. Spearheaded by Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL), the project involved revamping the 90,000 sq ft football ground into a state-of-the-art synthetic surface at an estimated cost of ₹2.5 crore.

Designed with a water drainage system to withstand heavy rainfall, the ground is nearing completion and will soon be accessible for public use. DM Aslam of the Dakshina Kannada District Football Association mentioned that installation of the astro turf should be wrapped up within two weeks. “This new surface will uplift football in the region, especially for young players. It’s a long-standing wish of the local football community to have a synthetic pitch in the city,” he noted. On average, around 150 youngsters train daily at Nehru Maidan—a number expected to rise with the upgraded facilities.

MSCL’s technical general manager, Arun Prabha KS, emphasized that the artificial turf would significantly enhance the quality of training and matches, encouraging broader participation. Though the initiative was conceived years ago, actual groundwork commenced post the monsoon league tournament in August last year.

Once completed, the venue will serve as a full-scale, all-weather football ground, ideal for hosting various levels of matches and nurturing regional talent.
