Mangaluru: In a move welcomed by thousands of devotees and locals, a newly concretised road leading to the Infant Jesus Shrine at Bikarnakatte was officially inaugurated on Monday, June 23. The long-awaited infrastructure improvement is expected to significantly ease access for pilgrims and improve safety and convenience during high footfall seasons.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Mr Manjunath Bhandary, President of the local Congress committee, in the presence of MLC Ivan D’Souza, Congress MP candidate Mr Padmaraj Poojary, and Fr Stifan Perera, Director of the Infant Jesus Shrine.

Tribute to a shrine that unites faiths

Speaking during the felicitation ceremony that followed the inauguration, MLC Ivan D’Souza reflected on the inclusive and spiritual significance of the Shrine. He recounted the visit of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to the Shrine and emphasised the cross-religious appeal of the sacred space. He also credited former Tourism Minister R.V. Deshpande for extending support during the previous government’s tenure for infrastructure development in the vicinity of the Shrine.

“The earlier condition of the road posed great difficulty to pilgrims and visitors. This new concrete road will now ensure smooth access and a better experience for all. I extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed towards the successful completion of this project,” he stated.

Commitment to constituency development

In his address, Mr Manjunath Bhandary underscored the vital role the Shrine plays in providing spiritual comfort and healing to the community.

“The Infant Jesus Shrine has long stood as a beacon of hope and solace for people from all walks of life. We consider it a privilege to support and serve such a sacred place,” he said, while also commending Mr Ivan D’Souza for his proactive work in realising development projects for the region.
