Mangaluru: The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal, commemorated the 123rd birth anniversary of its visionary founder, Sri U. Srinivas Mallya, on 21 November 2025. Revered as the “Father of Modern Dakshina Kannada District,” Sri Mallya’s far-reaching contributions laid the foundation for NITK’s growth and the region’s development.
Honouring the legacy of a visionary leader
Respects were paid to the statue of Sri U. Srinivas Mallya on the NITK campus, where NITK Director Prof. B. Ravi, institute functionaries, staff, alumni, and students gathered for a solemn garlanding ceremony at 9 a.m.

Originally established as the Karnataka Regional Engineering College (KREC), today’s NITK stands as a testament to Sri Mallya’s foresight. During his distinguished 18-year tenure as a Member of Parliament from 1946 to 1965, he played an instrumental role in shaping the region’s major infrastructure — including the New Mangalore Port, Bajpe airport, National Highway 66, and KREC itself.
A legacy of service and nation-building
In his remarks, Prof. B. Ravi expressed deep respect for Sri Mallya’s extraordinary contribution to nation-building. He noted that Mallya’s visionary approach continues to inspire generations of engineers and leaders who pass through NITK.
Sri Mallya was also known for his philanthropic spirit. He contributed generously to education, health, social welfare, and religious causes. A strong advocate for Gandhian values, he supported initiatives such as Khadi and Village Industries, temple entry for Dalits, and the eradication of untouchability — reinforcing his commitment to social reform and equality.
As NITK continues to grow as one of India’s premier institutions of engineering and technology, the commemoration served as a reminder of the institution’s roots and the remarkable legacy of the leader who envisioned its role in shaping the nation.
