Mangaluru: The National Security Guard (NSG) conducted a large-scale mock anti-terror operation in Mangaluru on Wednesday as part of a preparedness exercise to assess and strengthen emergency response capabilities.
The exercise simulated various scenarios aimed at countering terrorist attacks and handling high-risk situations, involving NSG commandos, helicopters and coordinated ground operations.
Helicopters trigger brief panic
The mock drill briefly caused anxiety among local residents after army helicopters were seen flying at low altitudes over parts of the city.
Many people were initially alarmed by the unusual aerial activity before authorities clarified that it was a planned security exercise. Once informed that it was only a mock drill, normalcy returned and public concern eased.
Key locations included in exercise
The operation was conducted near the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), Infosys campus and several educational institutions, where security personnel demonstrated tactical operations and emergency response procedures.
The drill showcased how specialised forces respond to potential terror threats, including rapid deployment, area sanitisation and coordinated rescue operations in sensitive locations.
Preparedness for emergency situations
Officials said such mock exercises are conducted periodically to test operational readiness, improve coordination among security agencies and ensure quick response during emergencies.
The exercise also helped evaluate preparedness at key installations and public places while familiarising security personnel with standard operating procedures during crisis situations.
