Prisoner in Mangalore jail twists staff’s hand for not giving lighter
Mangaluru: A tense situation unfolded at the Dakshina Kannada district jail in Kodialbail when an undertrial prisoner allegedly assaulted an on-duty jailer on Thursday.
The accused, identified as Raja alias Japan Manga, now faces additional charges following the incident. Reports indicate that the altercation began when Raja demanded a lighter while the jailer was securing Room No. 3 of ‘A’ Block. Upon being informed that the jailer did not have one, he reportedly grew agitated, verbally abused the officer, and insisted that his request be escalated to the superintendent.
When the jailer urged him to maintain civility and avoid using offensive language, the situation escalated. In a sudden act of aggression, Raja allegedly grabbed the jailer’s right hand through the cell bars and twisted it violently, inflicting serious injury.
Following the assault, jailer Vijay Kumar Sanka was rushed to Wenlock Hospital for medical attention. A formal complaint has been lodged at Barke police station, and authorities have launched an investigation into the matter.
Officials have emphasized the need for stricter security measures within the prison to prevent such violent incidents against staff members. Further action is expected as the probe continues.
