Mangaluru/Udupi: In a bid to curb the rising menace of narcotics among youth, police in Mangaluru and Udupi have launched a QR code-based complaint system, enabling citizens to report drug-related activities without fear of exposure.
The initiative, rolled out by the Mangaluru police commissionerate and Udupi district police, aims to encourage students and the general public to share information on drug peddling and usage. QR codes are being displayed prominently in colleges, schools, and public spaces to spread awareness.
The standout feature is complete anonymity. When scanned, the QR code opens a police-developed web link without collecting any personal data. Complainants are asked simple questions such as whether they suspect drug peddling, usage, or possession in their vicinity. Responses are sent directly to a dedicated cell at the Mangaluru police commissioner’s office or the Udupi SP office, ensuring swift action.

In the past, fear of influential involvement and possible leaks from within the force discouraged people from filing complaints. This new system eliminates such concerns, and results are already visible. Over a hundred individuals in Mangaluru have used the code, helping police crack several cases and arrest multiple traffickers.
Mangaluru city police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy confirmed that complaints remain fully confidential. Udupi SP Hariram Shankar added that QR codes will be placed on notice boards, public locations, and CCTV-monitored areas, with immediate investigations launched upon receipt of credible information.
