In a prompt and coordinated effort, Mangaluru police officers averted a potential tragedy by preventing a 75-year-old man from jumping off Pavanje bridge on the city’s outskirts.

According to DCP (Crime and Traffic) Ravishankar, the incident began when Vishwanath Shetty, a senior citizen residing in PVS Kalakunja, left home stating he was heading to Kudroli Temple but did not return. Concerned for his safety, his family promptly filed a missing person complaint at Barke Police Station, submitted by a man named Nithin.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Sudhakar quickly forwarded the details to the ERSS-112 emergency response system, triggering an urgent alert.

Acting swiftly, Head Constables Yogeesh and Kishore Kumar, along with Constable Madhukar—on ERSS-112 patrol duty under Mulki Police Station’s jurisdiction—raced to the Pavanje bridge following a tip-off. There, they found Vishwanath Shetty at the brink of a suicide attempt, preparing to jump into the river.

Demonstrating courage and quick thinking, the officers intervened and managed to rescue Shetty before he could harm himself.

The police action has been widely appreciated as a life-saving intervention, highlighting the importance of community vigilance, family reporting, and rapid emergency response in mental health crises.

Authorities are expected to provide Shetty with further assistance and ensure proper psychological support is extended.
