Street Vendors Celebrated at District Convention on Street Vendors’ Day

Mangaluru: Street vendors, despite not having the formal business training of large-scale entrepreneurs, have developed impressive trade skills through daily experience, contributing significantly to the city’s growth, said retired professor Dr. Rita Noronha.

Dr. Noronha was speaking at the district-level convention organized by the Dakshina Kannada District Street Vendors Welfare Association at Kudmul Rangarao Town Hall, Mangaluru, on Tuesday, as part of Street Vendors’ Day celebrations.

“Everyone deserves to live with dignity,” Dr. Noronha emphasized, highlighting how street vendors, through their collective efforts, have successfully secured laws and regulations that protect their interests. She called for the effective implementation of these protections to benefit vendors further.

Dr. Noronha encouraged the association to focus on helping vendors grow their businesses and ensure their children receive an education for a better future.

The event was further enriched by the presence of notable social achievers like Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba, and activist S P Anand, who has worked tirelessly for Dalit rights. Dr. Noronha commended their involvement, saying their participation added great value to the event.

Harish Poojary, General Secretary of the association, presided over the event, which also included the felicitation of senior street vendors Sridhar Bhandary, Adam Bajal, and Mary D’Souza for their contributions.

Among the distinguished guests were Mayor Manoj Kumar, legal advisor M B Nadap, urban campaign manager N Chittaranjan, and S P Anand.

The event was compered by Chetan Pilikula, and the association’s leadership, President Muhammad Mustafa and Treasurer Asif Bawa, were also present.
