Mangaluru– Mohammed Akbar Ismail Chowdhary, a convicted terrorist in the 2007 Hyderabad twin blasts and 2008 Mumbai serial bombings, was presented before a Mangaluru court on Monday regarding a separate case filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Explosives Act at Ullal police station.

Currently incarcerated at Cherlapally Central Prison in Telangana, Chowdhary was produced before the Third JMFC Court in Mangaluru by Ullal police, with Telangana officers in attendance. His appearance followed a body warrant, and the court postponed proceedings to July 23, granting time for his legal defense. He was later escorted back to Telangana custody.

Chowdhary, along with Anique Shafique Syed, has already been handed the death penalty by a Hyderabad metropolitan court for their involvement in the 2007 terror attacks. A third accused, Mohammed Tareeq Anjum, was given a life sentence. All three were believed to be associated with the banned terrorist outfit Indian Mujahideen.

Originally hailing from Mithanagar in Kondhwa Khurd, Pune, Chowdhary is alleged to have played a pivotal role in terror-related activities across Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, and Mangaluru. Investigators claim he operated in the Chembugudde-Mukkacheri area in Ullal, from where explosives used in the Hyderabad bombings may have been procured.

The case highlights Mangaluru’s links in past terror logistics and the continued pursuit of justice through inter-state coordination.
