Mangaluru: In a prompt and coordinated rescue effort, local police successfully thwarted a suicide attempt by a 75-year-old man near Pavanje Bridge on the outskirts of the city.
According to DCP (Crime and Traffic) Ravishankar, the incident came to light after a complaint was filed by Nithin at Barke Police Station. The elderly man, Vishwanath Shetty, a resident of PVS Kalakunja in Mangaluru, had reportedly left home earlier that day, claiming he was heading to Kudroli Temple but never returned. Alarmed by his absence, the family reported him missing.
Acting swiftly, Assistant Sub-Inspector Sudhakar from Barke Police Station alerted the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112). Responding to the alert were head constables Yogeesh and Kishore Kumar, along with constable Madhukar, all on ERSS-112 duty under Mulki Police jurisdiction.
Based on a tip-off, the officers rushed to Pavanje Bridge, where they located Shetty preparing to jump into the river. With the help of nearby citizens, the team managed to prevent the tragedy and safely bring him back.
Investigations revealed that Shetty had been suffering from a long-term skin ailment, which had taken a toll on his mental well-being and led to the drastic decision.
