Mangaluru: A family trip from Mumbai turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after two teenagers drowned at NITK beach on Monday afternoon.
The victims, part of a 10-member group visiting the coastal region, have been identified as 18-year-old Dhyan Banjan and 15-year-old Hanish Kulal. Both boys reportedly got swept away by strong currents while swimming in the sea.
Lifeguard Pradeep Acharya, who was on duty at the time, acted swiftly and managed to rescue Dhyan Banjan from the water. He was immediately taken to Padmavathi Hospital, but despite efforts, doctors declared him brought dead.
Search operations for Hanish Kulal are still underway. Teams from the local police, fire and emergency services, and expert lifeguards are involved in the ongoing rescue efforts, but the minor remains untraced as of the latest reports.
The affected family hails originally from Surinje and is currently settled in Mumbai. They were visiting the NITK beach — a popular tourist spot near Mangaluru — when the tragic incident occurred.
Dhyan Banjan, the deceased teen, was the son of Vivekananda Banjan and a resident of Mumbai. Authorities have requested beachgoers to exercise extreme caution during swims, especially with unpredictable currents in the region.
