Puttur: Police have taken into custody two accused involved in a daylight theft at an arecanut and forest produce purchase centre located in the Shriram Gopal Kamat Commercial Complex near Gandhi Park. The theft, which occurred on October 27, resulted in the loss of ₹5 lakh in cash, along with a bag containing important documents and cheques.
Duo arrested in another case confess to Uppinangady theft
The accused have been identified as Muhammad Shahbad (26) and Jamsheed (25), both residents of Mudigere. The duo had earlier been arrested by N R Pura police in Chikkamagaluru district in connection with a separate theft case. During interrogation, the accused are said to have confessed to committing the Uppinangady theft as well.
Following the confession, Uppinangady police secured their custody for further investigation and initiated a separate case related to the Puttur incident.
Theft occurred when shop owner stepped out briefly
The incident took place at the arecanut and forest produce buying centre owned by Vasanth. On the afternoon of October 27, the shop owner had locked the cash drawer and stepped out briefly to use the restroom, leaving the shop shutter open.
On his return, he found the drawer broken open and ₹5 lakh missing. A complaint was immediately lodged at the Uppinangady police station.
Police conduct spot inspection
After securing custody from N R Pura police, a team led by Rural Police Inspector Nagaraju brought the accused to Uppinangady. The police then conducted a spot inspection at the scene of the crime before formally registering the case in connection with the theft.
Further investigation is underway to determine whether the duo is involved in similar thefts in the region.
