Mangaluru (PTI): Authorities have booked several individuals for allegedly sharing WhatsApp messages promoting a protest gathering in Bantwal, despite official denial of permission, police confirmed on Friday.

Ashraf Talapady, affiliated with the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), along with two associates, had requested approval to use sound systems and arrange security for a demonstration concerning the deaths of Abdul Rahiman and another man named Ashraf from Wayanad.

However, Bantwal Town Police declined their plea after the applicants reportedly confessed they lacked solid evidence, formal complaints from families, or clarity regarding any state compensation demands or suspects involved in either incident.

Police further noted that First Information Reports (FIRs) had already been filed and inquiries were ongoing in both cases. The group was urged to follow legitimate procedures and approach investigative officials or relevant government bodies for further action.

Despite the rejection, digital posters advertising the protest surfaced on WhatsApp, allegedly circulated by the same individuals or their supporters. This led authorities to file a new case under relevant sections, with further steps being pursued as per legal provisions.

Abdul Rahiman (32) was fatally attacked on May 27 in Kuryal village, under Bantwal Rural Police limits. Three suspects have since been taken into custody.

In an earlier, unrelated case on April 27, Ashraf, hailing from Wayanad, was allegedly lynched during a cricket match after he reportedly raised pro-Pakistan slogans.

Police are monitoring the situation closely to prevent any escalation.
