Mangaluru: A 22-year-old youth allegedly died by suicide after first attempting to harm himself and later hanging himself from a ceiling fan at a rented apartment near Kadri Shivabhag.
The deceased has been identified as Roshan (22), a native of Peruvadu in Kumbla, Kasaragod district, Kerala. He had been working at an ice cream shop near Kadri Park and was staying in a rented apartment along with other youths for the past four months.
According to preliminary reports, the incident is suspected to have taken place late on Tuesday night. It is learnt that Roshan initially attempted to end his life by cutting his hand, leaving blood stains inside the room. Investigators suspect that he later hanged himself from the ceiling fan.
Roommates alerted after no response
On Wednesday morning, when Roshan did not come out of his room until around 10 am, his roommates reportedly grew suspicious. After repeated attempts to contact him went unanswered, they opened the door and found him hanging. They immediately alerted the police.
A liquor bottle was found in the room during the preliminary inspection. Police also found that a girl’s name had been written on the wall in blood. In addition, Roshan had reportedly posted a WhatsApp status stating that it was his “last status” prior to the incident.
Based on initial findings, police suspect that he may have taken the extreme step due to emotional distress, possibly linked to a failed love affair. However, officials have stated that all angles are being examined as part of the investigation.
Previous attempt reported
Family members informed the police that Roshan had allegedly attempted suicide about seven months ago in his hometown. This information is being taken into consideration as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The Kadri Police Station has registered a case of unnatural death and initiated further investigation. Statements from roommates and family members are being recorded to ascertain the sequence of events leading to the incident.
The body was shifted for post-mortem examination, and further procedures are being carried out as per legal requirements.
Police officials have urged the public not to speculate and to avoid circulating unverified information related to the case on social media.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns about mental health issues among young people living away from home for work. Authorities have reiterated the importance of seeking help and support during times of emotional distress.
If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available through local health services and mental health helplines.
Investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the death is continuing.
