Mangaluru: The persistent issue of illegal water tapping from the main water pipeline running from Thumbe dam to various water tanks in Mangaluru has raised concerns, with Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur issuing a stern warning against such unauthorized activities.

Despite decades of ongoing water theft, little action has been taken to curb the problem. Mayor Shetty reiterated the city’s determination to address the issue this time, amid looming water scarcity concerns.

Several illegal connections have already been disconnected, but Mayor Shetty emphasized that Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) would not resort to rationing drinking water supply. Assuring citizens of adequate water availability this summer, he cited the current water levels in key reservoirs like Thumbe vented dam and AMR vented dam, which continue to hold substantial water reserves.

However, Mayor Shetty urged residents to use water judiciously, emphasizing the importance of avoiding wasteful practices such as washing cars or watering gardens with drinking water.

Recent disruptions in water supply, such as the damage to the water supply line at Kodialguttu during underground drainage projects, have prompted temporary shortages in certain wards. Efforts to repair damages have commenced, with normal water supply expected to resume within a few days.

In response to potential scarcity, MCC has deployed six tankers to supply drinking water to areas facing shortages. Additionally, recent recommendations from the Human Rights Commission have underscored the need for completing water treatment plant construction and addressing common pipeline issues with PWD assistance, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance water management practices in the region.
