Chamarajanagar: The farmers of Gundlupet town had a reason to rejoice on Sunday. June 23, as their long-awaited demand for water to be released to Vaddagere lake had finally paid off.
The water was released to the lake at around 4 PM yesterday, a moment for the villagers to celebrate.
A few days ago, the farmers had staged a protest day and night against the state government demanding to resolve the issue of acute water crisis in the village. As a result of this, on June 22, the motors at Hutturu Pump House had functioned for nearly 40 minutes and the water eventually reached the Vaddagere lake. Unfortunately, the water pipes had air blocks because of being defunct for a long time. Due to this, the people who had gathered to watch the sight of water flowing into the lake after a long time, were left distressed.
The Raitha Sangha had called for a protest condemning the situation and had also planned to go for hunger strike if the situation had continued. However, the protestors received massive support for the hunger strike call.
The officers concerned were alarmed by the situation going worse and they directed the water resource department to rectify the issue and start the water pump.
Eventually, the action taken by farmers paid off and the water finally flowed into the lake on Sunday evening.
