In Karnataka, an alarming 12% of adults are now battling diabetes, placing the state third in the country after Maharashtra and Kerala. Health experts attribute this surge to sedentary lifestyles and unhealthy dietary changes.
Recent data from the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD), under the National Health Mission (NHM), reveals that out of 2,37,00,475 individuals screened statewide, 28,83,541 were diagnosed with diabetes. Of these, 28,74,257 are currently receiving treatment, according to statistics shared by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, in the Lok Sabha.
Nationally, 32,33,32,732 adults were screened under the same program, identifying 2,96,26,225 as diabetic.
Experts emphasize the urgent need for proactive measures, including increasing physical activity and promoting healthier eating habits, to curb this growing health crisis. With diabetes now a significant public health concern, collective efforts are essential to mitigate its impact.
