Mysuru: “In the last 15 years, we have raised more than Rs 300 Crore through long distance running including marathon and half marathon events”, said Dilip Jayaram, Chief Operating Officer (COO), Procam.

Delivering the sports talk organised by Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara Institute for Management (SDMIMD) and Centre for Sports and Management Studies (CS and MS) at its premise, he said, “Over the years, the charity figures have risen steadily from Rs 1.4 Crore to nearly Rs 50 Crore in 2017. Every year the number of long distance running events across the country is increasing. At an average, more than 1074 long distance running events including 10 km, half marathon and marathon are held in the country. To organise these events, sports management professionals are in great demand. The demand is so much that the institutes are not able to meet the demand. Every year, more than 1600 sports management professionals are recruited.”

“Sports management professionals are also required to run various sport associations which includes Board Control for Cricket in India, Sport Authority of India, various leagues including Indian Premier League. To manage each IPL team, the owners of each franchise appoint more than two sports management professionals. Apart from this, for conducting various sporting events, more sports management professionals are required”, added Jayaram who was also instrumental in bringing Indian Hockey League.

“The response for Mumbai marathon which is Asia’s longest marathon is too good. The registration gets completed within four hours of its commencement. Not everyone can take part in the Mumbai marathon which is held once in year. Only the best with certificates can apply. On the same line, if one wants to take part in the Boston Marathon, a participation certificate from Mumbai Marathon is a must”, added Jayaram.

N Rico, former Indian tennis team coach and founder of the course, H Gayathri, Programme Director of Sports Management course were also present. Former International tennis player Somdev Devvarman is the Brand Ambassador for “Sports Management Courses” of the institute.
