Mysuru: One in every 20 persons develop kidney stones at some point in their lifetime. A kidney stone is a hard crystalline mineral formed within the kidney, caused due to certain medical conditions such as gout, said Dr. T P Dinesh Kumar, Consultant Urology, Columbia Asia Hospital. Keeping this in mind, the Columbia Asia Hospital in Mysuru is conducting an in-house clinic for Kidney stones till April 11.

“These are small stones that pass unnoticed through the urinary tract but many a times they can cause extreme pain when they leave the body. Those who take certain medications or supplements are at risk. Diet and hereditary factors are also related to stone formation. Obese and diabetic patients are always at a high risk of kidney stones. Severe abdominal pain, blood in urine, burning sensation while passing urine, fever with chills are some of the symptoms of kidney stones. This can be diagnosed using ultrasound or CT scan”, said Dr. Dinesh. He also informed that kidney stones can be treated with pain control medications and in majority of cases laser lithotripsy, PCNL (Key hole surgery) and ESWL. “Laser treatment for kidney stones is a painless, incision-less (no cutting or no scar) endoscopic procedure. Flexible ureterorenoscopy or RIRS uses holmium laser fibre to pulverise the stone into fine dust. This dust is made to pass through urine. The procedure can be done as a daycare procedure. Laser treatment is highly effective and the curative rate is almost 98 to 99 percent”, opined Dr. Dinesh.

How kidney stones can be prevented?

“Kidney stones can be prevented by following certain measures including taking plenty of oral fluids, avoiding dehydration, taking potassium rich and citrate containing fluids and reducing weight and controlling diabetes. Certain medications prescribed by urologists will help in reducing recurrence of kidney stones”, added Dr. Dinesh.
