Madikeri: The Excise Department officials arrested two persons for possessing deer meat at Tholpatti Gate, Kutta Gadi here on July 11.
The officials confiscated 3.3 kg deer meat from the accused identified as Vijesh and Ajeesh, both residents of Mahe.
Acting on a tip-off that the meat of the wild animal is being transported, the Excise Department officials launched an operation to nab the culprits. It is gathered that the duo killed the deer in the forests and transported the meat by bike to avoid suspicion. The arrested were later handed over to the forest department officials.
Deer is included in India’s Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 that bans the killing of all wild animals.
