Kadina Makkala Habba – 2017 draws wide appreciation

Madikeri: The three-day Kadina Makkala Habba- 2017 to showcase tribal culture got underway in Gandhi Maidan on March 18 drawing huge appreciation from different sections of the society.

Inaugurating the fest jointly organised by Tanjavur southern zone cultural centre and local Akashvani Kendra, Deputy Commissioner Dr. Richard Vincent D’Souza appreciated the efforts of the organisers and cultural teams to preserve and develop the age old tribal culture, while seeking support from wider audience.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. E N Sajil, Director of Tanjavur South Zone Cultural Centre appreciated the efforts in organising the fest successfully during the last four years to showcase the vibrant tribal culture where the aboriginal artefacts are also on display.

Deputy Director of Madikeri Akashavani Centre sought more encouragement to protect the tribal culture.

Tribal cultural troupes from different parts of the state are taking part in the fest including Siddi community led by Shekar Siddi of Karwar, Kuruvara dance troupe led by Mallegowda and Dhobi, Jenu Kuruba, Betta Kuruba local dance troupes. Soliga, Malekudiya and Yerava tribal cultural troupes are also taking part in the festival.

Apart from tribes, dance teams from Kodagu will be in action displaying local dance forms of Bolkat, Kolat, Kattiyat, Pareyakali and Ummathat.

Teams from Thoda tribal community (found in Ooty and surrounding areas) from Tamil Nadu, Dhimsa from Andhra Pradesh, Lambani from Telangana, Mangalam Kali from Kerala and Parichara Kali from distant Lakshadweep will be in action during the fest, according to programme coordinator P Balan.

City Municipal Council President Kaveramma Somanna, Kodava Sahitya Academy President B S Thammaiah and former Akashavani director Indira Yesupriya Gajraj were among those present among the well-wishers.

Around 28 different cultural troupes from the state and elsewhere comprising 400 artistes are taking part in the fest.
