Nanjangud: The leopard which was trapped by forest officials managed to escape from an rusted cage injuring two in Konanur village in Nanjangud.
Earlier the leopard had killed two calf owned by Basumari Shetty and also attacked many domesticated animals in the area.
The residents of the village had complained to the forest officials about the menace that was being caused by the leopard. Accordingly, the officials had kept a cage with a goat as a bait for many days at the lands of one Basumari Shetty.
On hearing the news of leopard being caught, villagers started rushing to the spot to have a glimpse on big cat. The animal probably getting scared and irritated by the crowd managed to break the grill of the cage and escaped injuring Mahadevaswamy and Prakash.
The injured persons were offered first aid at Nanjangud General Hospital and later admitted to K.R. Hospital in Mysuru.
The family of the injured has demanded compensation from the government. The locals urged the forest officials to trap the leopard.
Nanjangud forest officer Nithin Kumar, forest guards and staff have assured that they would take further action. The rusted obsolete cage was replaced with a good one.
