Mandya: In a horrific incident a couple distressed with poverty tried to sell their own child on Saturday January 5.
Reportedly the duo tried to sell their two-day-old daughter as they were completely distressed with their conditions of poverty.
The couple has been identified as Jagadish and Ranganayaki, they hail from Hariharapura village at K R Peth which is under Mandya district. Jagadish is said to be blind and thus jobless whereas Ranganayaki is a daily wage laborer.
It is learnt that Ranganayaki is Jagadishs second wife and they already have a daughter, born to the first wife of Jagadish. Ranganayaki lately gave birth to another child and as circumstances did not pay heed, the couple tried to sell their new born.
Moreover it is also known that as Ranganayaki gave birth to a girl, the parents decided to sell the child. A social worker alerted hospital authorities on the attempt made by the couple to sell the baby.
Officials from the department of Women and Child Welfare visited the hospital and convinced the couple against selling the child.
