Mandya: A cop posted in the sugar town became the latest victim of Phishing when fraudsters posing as executives of a nationalised bank managed to collect details of his bank account including the PIN of his debit card only to dupe him of Rs. 40,000 within minutes of getting details.

It is reported that the victim, whose identity is yet to be established, shared details of his bank account when fraudsters called on him over phone on Monday seeking details in the pretext of confirming the details of his account to upgrade his account.

On learning of being duped, the victim immediately lodged a complaint with the Police who handed over the case to Cyber Police.

Preliminary investigations traced the phone number to Bihar and further probe revealed that the fraudsters had made over 3,000 such calls across the country, said a senior Police Officer, who added that using similar modus operandi, the fraudsters had duped a retired magistrate and made away with Rs. 10,000.

It is said that the fraudsters, who made a similar call to a Bank Manager, disconnected the call on being asked for their identity.

SP warns: Meanwhile, SP (Cyber Crime) D.C. Rajappa has urged the citizens not to entertain such calls since no bank executives are authorised to seek details of account from anyone and such incidents, if any, should be brought to the notice of the Police.
