Mandya: Mandya farmers are enraged over the release of water from Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) dam and have started protests against the decision. Police have increased security around the dam site to prevent untoward incidents in the wake of farmer protests.
KRS dam started receiving water from Kodagu region in the last few days. The inflow at the dam is around 17500 cusecs and the water level is around 71 feet. Meanwhile, 2500 cusecs of water was released from the dam and that decision enraged the farmers. Farmers’ unions joined by various pro-Kannada organisations joined protests against water release and sought reversal of the decision.
To ensure peace in the area, elaborate security arrangements have been made by the police department. Additional police force is being deployed to beef-up security. Police have kept a vigil on Tamil colony in Mandya town too. IGP (Southern Range) Vipul Kumar visited the dam site and instructed SP Radhika and other police officials to keep a close watch on the developments.
It may be recalled that only yesterday farmers in and around Kabini basin too had protested against water release from Kabini dam.
The state government on the other hand has to fulfil the apex court order on release of water. Inconsistent and inadequate rainfall in the catchment areas of the dam has only aggravated the issue.
