In the aftermath of Cyclone Fengal’s incessant rains, a large boulder rolled down Chamundi Hill and blocked the road leading to Mysuru, causing a brief scare. The incident occurred between Monday night and early Tuesday morning but fortunately resulted in no casualties or vehicle damage. The boulder fell from the left side of the road, landing on the median after a curve, around 1.5 km from the Chamundi Hill arch gate.
The issue was first noticed by a vigilant KSRTC bus driver, who applied the brakes just in time to avoid hitting the boulder. Public Works Department (PWD) officials responded quickly, clearing the obstruction using an earth-moving vehicle. An inspection revealed a crack in the slab supporting the boulder, which likely caused its fall. Locals have raised concerns about the risk of further collapses unless preventive measures are taken promptly.
PWD Executive Engineer Raju mentioned that a joint inspection with Forest Department officials would be conducted to assess and address other potentially unstable boulders in the area. Residents of Chamundi Hill have called for immediate attention to other vulnerable spots to prevent future incidents.
