The Mysuru-Bengaluru National Highway-275, a key artery connecting two major cities in Karnataka, is grappling with dual challenges: a rise in robbery cases and rampant traffic violations. These issues have raised concerns about passenger safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement along the route.
Robbery Incidents
A total of 26 robbery cases have been reported on the highway and its service roads, with Mandya district accounting for 14 cases and Ramanagara for 12. Law enforcement has made progress by solving 20 cases (9 in Mandya and 11 in Ramanagara), according to Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara, who addressed the issue during the Legislative Council session in Belagavi.
Traffic Violations on the Rise
Over the last three years, the highway has witnessed 13,41,940 recorded traffic violations, resulting in fines totaling Rs. 90.71 crore. However, Rs. 85.80 crore remains unpaid, with 12,67,238 cases still pending.
The highway is equipped with an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) featuring cameras at 12 strategic locations across Mandya, Ramanagara, and Mysuru districts. These cameras monitor violations, and offenders are notified via SMS to pay their fines.
Passenger Complaints and Allegations
Concerns have been raised by drivers regarding alleged fines issued despite adherence to traffic rules, such as proper seat belt usage or not using phones while driving. Authorities are reviewing these complaints to ensure fair enforcement of the law.
Responding to allegations of barricading and vehicle inspections along the highway, Dr. Parameshwara clarified that no such checks are conducted on NH-275, emphasizing that efforts are focused on improving safety without disrupting traffic flow.
Steps Toward Enhanced Safety
While the government claims to prioritize passenger safety, the dual challenges of unresolved robberies and unpaid fines underscore the need for stronger measures, including:
- Increased patrolling to deter robberies.
- Enhanced public awareness of ITMS to ensure compliance.
- Addressing pending complaints to build trust in traffic enforcement.
Passengers and drivers are calling for swift and effective action to restore safety and reliability to one of Karnataka’s busiest highways.
