Zilla Panchayat CEO KM Gayathri praised the efforts of Kayaka Bandus in strengthening the implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) in Mysuru. Speaking at the valedictory event of a divisional-level training program for Kayaka Bandus, organized by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, she emphasized their crucial role in bridging communities with gram panchayats.

Roles and Responsibilities of Kayaka Bandus
Kayaka Bandus were introduced by the state government to create awareness about MNREGA and ensure its seamless execution. They:

  • Collect work requirements from laborers using Form 6 and submit it to gram panchayats or Panchayat Development Officers (PDOs).
  • Maintain attendance for laborers engaged in MNREGA projects.
  • Oversee the provision of essential facilities like drinking water at work sites.

Gayathri highlighted their contributions to fulfilling the scheme’s promise of 100 days of guaranteed employment while also facilitating rural development projects, such as better roads, water conservation, and social forestry.

Preventing Migration and Boosting Wages
Deputy Secretary of Zilla Panchayat, M. Krishnaraju, noted MNREGA’s role in reducing migration by ensuring local employment. Karnataka has garnered a reputation for effectively implementing MNREGA, offering some of the highest wages nationally for job card holders.

This training program, held at Bannimantap, reflects the state’s commitment to upskilling personnel and enhancing the impact of rural employment initiatives.
