Mysuru: In a major boost to the city’s railway infrastructure, the Mysuru New Goods Terminal (MNGT) will remain at its current location after the Railways dropped earlier plans to shift it to Yeliyur in Mandya district.
Railway authorities have instead decided to establish a state-of-the-art Vande Bharat Maintenance Depot within the existing MNGT premises, citing the availability of adequate land to accommodate both facilities.
Minister’s directive halts relocation plan
The earlier proposal by the Mysuru Railway Division involved relocating the goods terminal to Yeliyur to create space for a dedicated service station for Vande Bharat Express trains.
However, the plan was shelved after Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna firmly stated that the goods terminal should not be shifted under any circumstances.
Following this directive, the Railways opted for a revised plan to utilise the existing space at MNGT for the new facility.
₹400 crore proposal to be submitted
Divisional Railway Manager Mudit Mittal confirmed that a proposal to set up the Vande Bharat Maintenance Depot at the same location will soon be submitted to the Railway Board for approval.
The project is estimated to cost around ₹400 crore and is expected to significantly enhance maintenance capabilities for modern train services.
Advanced maintenance infrastructure planned
The proposed depot will feature advanced infrastructure tailored for high-speed train maintenance. This includes specialised pit line centres designed exclusively for servicing Vande Bharat trains, automated washing systems, and modern diagnostic and repair equipment.
Officials said the facility will function as a comprehensive hub for train upkeep, covering routine servicing, cleaning, and defect rectification.
