Mysuru: Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has announced plans to construct a new stadium with indoor facilities for kabaddi and badminton at Kumbara Koppal, at an estimated cost of ₹4.9 crore.
The project will come up on 2.5 acres of land identified near the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Kumbara Koppal, a locality known for its rich sporting heritage.
DPR prepared, work to begin soon
With approval already granted at a council meeting, MCC has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) for the stadium. Officials said construction is expected to commence within the next two months, once the DPR receives final approval and the tender process is completed.
According to MCC Superintendent Engineer C S Manju, the corporation has set a six-month timeline for completion. If the project proceeds as planned, the stadium could be ready within eight months.
Boost to youth sports activities
MCC Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif stated that Kumbara Koppal was chosen with the aim of promoting both indoor and outdoor sports among youth in the area.
He highlighted that developing modern sports infrastructure is essential to encourage participation and nurture talent at the grassroots level.
Area’s rich sporting legacy
Kumbara Koppal, one of the oldest localities in Mysuru, has a longstanding association with sports. During the Maharajas’ era, the area regularly hosted state- and national-level wrestling competitions.
Even today, several traditional wrestling training centres, known as garadi mane, continue to operate in the locality, preserving its sporting culture.
Key features of the stadium
The proposed stadium is designed to be a modern, multi-purpose facility with a range of amenities aimed at enhancing user experience and accessibility. Key features include:
- Indoor courts for kabaddi and badminton
- Seating capacity for around 700 spectators
- Disabled-friendly access
- Toilets and compound wall
- VIP lounges
- AI-based crowd monitoring system
- Rainwater harvesting infrastructure
The facility is expected to host sporting events throughout the year, providing a platform for local and regional competitions.
Conclusion
The proposed stadium at Kumbara Koppal represents a significant investment in Mysuru’s sports infrastructure. By combining modern amenities with the area’s traditional sporting roots, the project aims to create new opportunities for young athletes. If executed on schedule, the facility could become a key hub for indoor sports and community activities in the city.
