Mysuru: The Mysuru Dasara procession in all its grandeur has been drawing several tourists across the world.
The jumbos continue to be the major attraction of the Dasara procession with one tusker being entrusted with the responsibilty of carrying the 750 kg howdah (golden throne) mounted on its back.
However, it is learnt that Royal family- Scion Yaduveer Krishnadatta Wadiyar and his wife Trishika are mulling to go back to pre-1970 tradition of a herd of elephants pulling the golden howdah instead of one carrying the same. At present the howdy carrier walks over 5 kms with the howdah on its back for the annual Jumbo Savari.
The royal family recently consulted elephant experts, including those from the IISc, for their opinion on whether the howdah could be mounted on a chariot and drawn by a herd, as it was done prior to 1970. Experts have opined that a group of elephants drawing a chariot would be better than just one carrying the howdah as the animals will be less tense, and the fear of the animal losing its temper will also not be an issue.
However the decision in this matter will be taken by the Mysuru Dasara organising committee.
The Mysuru Dasara is slated to begin on September 21.
